The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US against five European individuals involved in combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been central to efforts to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the decision.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and Europe.
