Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a coordinated attack against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the UK's MoD.

The site, pinpointed through surveillance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was located in mountainous terrain just to the north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a number of approach shafts leading to the depot... preliminary assessments indicate the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the strike conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - also known as ISIS - established jihadist rule over significant areas in Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike shows British leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eradicate any re-emergence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the minister said.

RAF aircraft have conducted patrols over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State subsequent to its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank all the members of the UK armed forces participating in this operation for their professionalism and their valour," he added. "Including them were numerous British troops on duty over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to take out dangerous terrorists who endanger our way of life, shows how British military are ready to step up, throughout the year, protecting the UK within its borders and strong abroad."

Last December, the American forces conducted what it described as a "major assault" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, following an assault resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports Daesh still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
