In a notable development ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the wake of large-scale and fatal young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.
A Pledge to Tackle Youth Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which led to considerable casualties.
"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.
The late summer uprising was triggered by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of systemic political corruption.
Details of the New Political Agreement
According to the formal agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the country's older political leadership. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.
Broader Government Discussions Underway
In a related development, the current interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with a number of leading political figures. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the protests.
After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a collective responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
