Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Displacement Confirmed

The island nation has been hit hard by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, which left at least two people dead and displaced more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities stated that the massive storm caused extensive sudden floods, coastal inundation, mudslides, and destructive gale-force winds, prompting the relocation of 1.4 million people across the country.

Extensive Damage and Rescue Efforts

In Pandan, Catanduanes, a severely affected area, disaster response teams documented rising waters climbing to rooftop levels and residences washed out by the powerful currents.

“Our personnel rescued fourteen people who were trapped atop a house engulfed in flood in a low-lying neighbourhood,” an emergency official explained. “A father also called in panic, saying the roof of his house was about to be ripped off due to the storm. We saved him and four relatives.”

As of Monday morning, authorities announced at least two deaths: one from drowning on the island and another killed after her home gave way on Samar island.

Typhoon Strength and Forecast

The intense storm was downgraded to a severe tropical storm on Monday morning while moving over the main island, home to the national capital.

Per the state weather service, its maximum winds decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, though wind bursts were still reaching more than 275 km/h.

The storm system is expected to continue weakening while heading north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The country’s emergency management agency indicated efforts were ongoing to evaluate destruction to infrastructure and homes.

Approximately 6,000 evacuation centres have been opened to accommodate 92,000 families.

Recent Context and Environmental Factors

Fung-wong struck just days after another severe storm, which killed at least 224 people with dozens unaccounted for prior to advancing to Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Search operations for the missing persons were halted on Sunday due to safety concerns to emergency personnel.

The climate crisis is causing tropical storms stronger and common. Fung-wong is the twenty-first storm to impact the nation this year.

Scientists have found that the frequency of intense cyclones hitting the Philippines has risen doubled over the last two decades.

Global assessments indicate that intense storms cause approximately millions in dollars in damage for the Philippines annually.

The Philippine president issued a state of emergency last week due to the extensive devastation caused by the prior typhoon and anticipated impacts from the new storm.
