Trump's Woke Warning Misses Europe's Real Danger: Technological Stagnation.

The recent US national security strategy offers a misguided assessment of Europe. It claims that unrestrained immigration and so-called "woke" agendas represent an existential threat to European civilization. However, this argument rests on a fundamental misinterpretation of the situation. The actual challenge confronting the EU is not societal but economic and technological lag.

The Stark Growth Divide Between Europe and the US

Statistics reveal a sobering contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by 87%, compared to a paltry thirteen and a half percent growth for the European Union. Over this period, EU GDP per capita fell from 76.5% to just 50% of the US level. Remarkably, even the poorest US state now boasts a higher per capita income than several leading European economies like France and Italy.

Today, roughly half of the world’s 50 largest tech companies are American, while only four are European.

The Innovation Shortfall: The Core Problem

The growing economic gap stems from superior productivity growth in the US, fueled by technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The scene of world technology leadership is decidedly American. In the last fifty years, 241 US firms have grown into enterprises valued at over $10bn, versus just 14 in the European continent.

This disparity prompts a vital question: As the competition for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, where does the EU positioned? Experts widely concede it is largely a two-horse race between the US and China, with Europe starting at a significant handicap.

Root Causes of Europe's Innovation Gap

A number of key reasons account for this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a much more robust and more dynamic network for financing new ventures. Europe has yet to establish a true capital markets union, a factor that caps the growth potential of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided rules hinder European business. A American entrepreneur can introduce a product under a single set of laws to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a larger population size, is divided among twenty-seven separate systems, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on risk-taking differ sharply. In parts of Europe, business failure was historically viewed with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's long-term lack of spending in defense has weakened its capacity for pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Hopefulness

Despite these challenges, one can find reasons for hope. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have started to propose substantial change. Key reports on EU competitiveness and the single market point to the need for major changes.

With the right incentives and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths might enable far greater degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent still possesses considerable strengths: skilled workforce, top-tier schools and universities, and premier research institutions. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these foundations could unleash a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if Europe does not take the lead in creating cutting-edge tech, it can still significantly increase productivity by implementing and tailoring advancements from other regions.

An Inflection Point

Europe now stands at a decisive crossroads. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, the continent's slide in innovation has been steady. However, if it fails to take decisive action to address its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could turn into a rapid and permanent decline in world influence.
